The S&P 500 closed 0.22% lower at 7,801.77 on Wednesday, ending just above 7,800. It had fallen 0.71% at the session low. The Dow lost 0.66%, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.22%.

The recovery hid a wider split. The equal-weight S&P fund lost 0.81%, and the Russell 2000 fell 1.31%. By contrast, the Nasdaq rose 0.39% from its opening level. The rebound repaired index levels, not leadership.

The turn coincided with a strong Treasury sale. The $39 billion 10-year auction cleared at 5.300% with 2.77 times cover. Indirect bidders took $31.06 billion. The market yield retreated to 5.277% after touching 5.364%.

Breadth improved sharply into the bell. A Nasdaq post-close screen counted 3,283 advancers and 3,187 decliners across 6,992 securities. Another 522 were unchanged. Still, larger losses in industrial and rate-sensitive shares pulled equal weight lower.

Policy risk did not disappear. Federal Reserve minutes showed all participants backed September’s quarter-point increase. Most judged another increase likely appropriate by year-end. Several viewed policy as not restrictive, or only mildly restrictive.

Health care was the only clear gainer among 11 sector funds. Its 1.03% advance contrasted with a 2.18% industrials drop. Industrial-fund volume ran 39.4% above Tuesday’s total. That gave the defensive shift more weight.

Caterpillar Inc. NYSE:CAT fell 5.75% after a rating downgrade, while Deere & Co. NYSE:DE lost 3.80%. Eli Lilly and Co. NYSE:LLY gained 2.70%. Pfizer Inc. NYSE:PFE rose 1.78%, and Johnson & Johnson NYSE:JNJ added 1.44%.

Earnings produced a second split. Worthington Steel Inc. (NYSE:WS) sank 6.89% after weaker results. Constellation Brands Inc. NYSE:STZ rose 2.36% after its profit beat expectations. Chief Executive Nicholas Fink said, “We have sharpened our execution and increased investment across the business.”

The calls show why stock selection mattered. Same-day Constellation targets ranged from $120 to $209. Caterpillar’s $1,100 target stood 35% above Wednesday’s close, despite the session’s downgrade-driven fall.

Thursday starts with PepsiCo Inc. NASDAQ:PEP, which posts quarterly results at 6:00 a.m. EDT. Its snack and beverage commentary will test consumer resilience against higher fuel and borrowing costs.

Risks: A weak 30-year auction or another Brent move above $102.59 could lift yields again. That would threaten the small-cap and industrial rebound case. Strong duration demand could instead extend Wednesday’s late recovery.

The next rate test arrives Thursday at 1:00 p.m. EDT, when Treasury sells $22 billion of 30-year bonds. A narrower Russell-to-S&P gap afterward would show whether the auction relief can broaden.
