Average directional index (ADX) is a technical indicator that measures how strong a trend is, not which direction it’s moving. Developed by J. Welles Wilder in 1978, it plots on a scale of 0 to 100: low readings mean the market is drifting sideways, high readings mean a trend has real conviction behind it.
Wilder built ADX alongside two companion lines, the Plus Directional Indicator (+DI) and Minus Directional Indicator (-DI), which handle direction.

How ADX Works
ADX is derived from the Directional Movement Index (DMI), which compares each period’s price range to the one before it.
The standard setting is 14 periods, though traders shorten it to react faster (at the cost of more false signals) or lengthen it to filter noise (at the cost of lagging).
Read it like this:

How to Calculate ADX

- True Range (TR): the largest of current high−low, high−previous close, or low−previous close

+DM = Current High – Previous High
-DM = Previous Low – Current Low
ATR = Average True Range
N = Number of periods used in the calculation (the default is typically 14, but traders can adjust this as needed).
These calculations generate the three lines of the ADX indicator.
The +DI (green line) represents the positive directional indicator, while the -DI (red line) represents the negative directional indicator.
Also, the ADX (black line) is a non-directional indicator that reflects the average difference between +DI and -DI, plotted on a scale from 0 to 100, with no negative values.

Stack it with a direction tool. ADX pairs naturally with EMA, RSI, or MACD; those tell you where price wants to go; ADX tells you whether it’s worth following.
