SpaceX NASDAQ:SPCX has closed $40 billion in debt financing for graphics processing units, Elon Musk said in a social-media post on Sunday. He tied the purchases to deliveries in the first and second quarters. Reuters reported the statement on October 25.

The sum nearly equals the company’s $39.995 billion of AI capital spending through September. That business absorbed 83.2% of group capital expenditure during those nine months. The comparison measures funding scale, rather than the price of an identifiable chip order. The spending figures come from SpaceX’s October 20 results.

SpaceX reported 1.7 gigawatts of installed GPU nameplate capacity at September 30. Its quarterly filing defines that figure as installed GPU count multiplied by power ratings, excluding cooling and actual utilization. Sunday’s financing statement provided no corresponding increase in usable capacity. Delivery, installation and customer availability remain separate milestones.

Installed GPU capacity

Metric Reported value
September 2026 1.7 GW
June 2026 1.4 GW
Quarterly addition +0.3 GW
Quarterly growth About 21%
September 2025 0.6 GW
Annual growth About 183%

“This is primarily callable debt for GPU purchases that will arrive in Q1 and Q2,” Musk wrote, according to Reuters. He said it would have little effect in the current quarter.

The announcement specified neither a chip supplier nor the number of processors being financed. Lenders, interest rates and the hardware mix were also unspecified. Those omissions prevent a reliable conversion from borrowed dollars into GPU counts or megawatts.

The AI buildout already dominates spending. The satellite-connectivity and space businesses together spent $8.074 billion through September, according to the company’s quarterly filing. AI’s total was about five times as large.

Where capital spending went

Business January–September
AI / SI $39.995 bn
Connectivity $4.242 bn
Space $3.832 bn
Group total $48.069 bn
AI share 83.2%

Starlink contributes substantial operating earnings. Connectivity generated $2.367 billion of third-quarter operating income. The AI segment earned $431 million, while Space lost $7 million. Operating income measures business earnings before interest and taxes.

Musk linked the borrowing to SpaceX’s Starlink and launch revenue, saying those businesses helped preserve the company’s access to credit. He also described the company as investment grade. The statement reported by Reuters did not assign repayment obligations to individual businesses.

SpaceX already supplies external AI customers. In May, Anthropic announced an agreement to use all computing capacity at Colossus 1 for its Claude AI services. It described access to more than 300 megawatts and over 220,000 GPUs.

Anthropic linked that May agreement to higher usage limits for Claude Code and the Claude API. It supplies a customer example of how computing infrastructure can support services. The destinations and customers for Sunday’s financed GPUs remain undisclosed.

Evidence and its limits

Units: US dollars, billions (bn); gigawatts (GW); megawatts (MW); GPU count. Sources linked by row. As of October 25, 2026. Dates distinguish current statements from financial and customer background.

Risks: Chip arrivals must align with power, cooling and network commissioning before clusters can serve customers, regardless of the financing secured. Performance per dollar remains unquantifiable without the hardware mix.

The delivery schedule remains incomplete. Neither quarter was assigned a year or a commissioning timetable. Which campuses will receive those processors, and when will customers get usable capacity?
